Creating sculptures
A short statement of intentions
The reason for this etude was that I wanted to have some form of physical representation of the 3D model I will make in SketchUp. I think it’s good to have something you can touch, instead of just seeing it in Google Earth. I decided to look at different methods of creating models/sculptures out of 3D models. Because I don’t have any experience(or very little) in creating models or sculptures I had to find some form of tutorial on doing this. I did have an idea of how I would create this model, but it is always better to find a method that actually works and have been used by others. So this etude goal was simple to find a tutorial on how to create a sculpture out of a 3D representation of Grove House.
Documentation of Technical and Artistic Process
Before starting on this etude, I already knew about a process where you create a model out of a CAD design or 3D model. I’ve seen these used in Hollywood movies and the car industry as well. They are used to create quick prototypes, so you have a real life object, instead of looking at a monitor. This process is called Stereolithography, and I wanted to know about this process, because it is so widely used in creating prototypes, even though I won’t be using it because of the cost involved.

Origami
I had to find another more cheap and viable way of producing a model/sculpture out of the 3D model from Google Earth. I thought about creating paper models, and looked into origami, where you create unique paper figures and items by folding paper. Origami didn’t seem to produce the kind of paper model I wanted. My paper model is supposed to be of Grove House, and origami is more about creating unique and intricate designs out of paper.
I found the following tutorial very helpful in my search of creating a paper model of Grove House. This tutorial explains what items you need, and involves creating a fold-up paper model with step by step instructions.

How successful is the etude?
Another important etude, which I think was fairly successful. This etude was important because I am planning on creating a model out of the 3D model in SketchUp, and therefore needed to learn how to do this. I managed to find a very helpful tutorial on creating a fold-up paper model, I will be using some of the techniques used in this tutorial to create my own paper model. This etude’s goal was to find out about the methods available to create a physical model out of a 3D model, and I think I managed to reach this goal.
