Animatronics

A short statement of intentions
This etude is about exploring the world of animatronics. I chose to explore this field because animatronics are a form of hybrid of real life objects, which I think is interesting.

Describe and depict what the actual concept of the etude is
The reason for this etude was to explore animatronics and how they can be an interesting form of 3D hybrid. They are not robots which are operated by themselves, but are an extension of a human being which controls this animatronic. I also think that animatronics are interesting, as you can have a very simple animatronic, where you have some cogs operationg the whole thing and showing some form of movement. But on the other hand, there are very complext animatronics which are controlled, which are operated by more than one person controls it. A lot of animatronics are used in amusement parks like Disney Land, where they have animatronics for the ride Pirated of the Caribien. One of the animatronic are a replica of Johnny Deep from this movie. An animatronic is the only solution if you want Johnny Deep to “be there” every day for the kids, and welcome them to the ride. It is like a hybrid extension of the actor, which are made to be life like and like the character in the movie.

Documentation of Technical and Artistic Process
As I was interested in animatronics I searched for various animatronics sites, and have written about how to create an animatronic. I used HowStuffWorks.com to give me an idea of what an animatronic is. Wikipedia was also useful in this regard, as they have a very precise definition of animatronic.

Disney have created a new ride for their Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The interesting aspect of this ride is the Johnny Deep animatronic, which looks very life like. Take a look at the video for yourself.

How successful is the etude?
As much as I want to be positive about how this etude went, I must admit that I didn’t do as much research as I had initially planned for this etude. I think the reason for this is mainly because I concentrated on the other etude, as I found them more interesting and easier to get involved with. I also think it can be a tough subject to get hands-on experience with, as it’s not easy to actually sit and create and animatronic, it requires a lot of time and skill.
